Var Sports Bar

When we took on the project, we went to have a look at the space and the first thing that struck us was how fragmented the space was. The floor had different heights, with steps here and there, and it was unclear how each area would be used. We needed to think about how to integrate those elements to make the space functional and welcoming. Only then would we be able to transform this 50m² space in the historic center of Porto into a vibrant sports bar.

We based the design on a central axis that would run longitudinally through the entire space. We materialized this idea by placing a large table that runs the length of the building. The table starts on the ground floor, defining the dining area, and continues to the bar. In the middle of this enormous table is a mesh and sheet metal panel that connects those two areas, allowing you to watch the game from both sides.

For the visual identity, we created a custom backslanted typeface that mimics the «rewind» action when the referee calls on the video referee for assistance. We added small breaks in the characters to emphasise the unsettling feelings of anticipation and hope that get our hearts racing during tournaments. This typeface is strategically placed on the menu, signage, and coasters to remind you that it's not over until the final whistle blows.
